How to prepare pesara avakaya / moong dal mango pickle

In summer season, raw mangoes are used to make pickles of different varieties. These pickles are preserved for long time. Pesara avakaya is a delicious mouth watering recipe easy to make with very few ingredients. This pickle is entirely different from normal pickle recipes. Here the main ingredient used is green gram which plays a major role in pickle flavor. Let us see the procedure:


  • Mango pieces- 2 mangoes- 2 or 3 cups
  • Moong dal- 1/2 cup
  • Red chilli powder- 1/2 cup
  • Salt- 1/2 cup
  • Sesame oil- 1/2 cup


Step 1: Wash and clean mangoes without any water by using a cotton cloth.

Step 2: Cut mangoes into small pieces and set aside.

Step 3: Roast moong dal for 2-3min at medium flame, set aside to cool.

Step 4: After sometime, grind moong dal into fine powder.

Step 5: Combine moong dal powder, salt and red chilli powder in a large bowl.

Step 6: Add mango pieces and mix it well by using your hands.

Step 7: Add oil and stir it well and set the whole recipe in a glass jar.

Step 8: Let the mango pieces get marinated for atleast 4-5days.

Step 9: Serve pesara avakaya with hot steamed rice and ghee.
