How to make onion ginger chutney


It’s very easy to make delicious ginger and onion chutney. Onion ginger chutney is very hot and spicy recipe made with dried red chillies. Recipe is very popular in south India and it is perfect combination with all kind of tiffins.


  • onion- 1 big size
  • ginger- 10gms
  • grated jaggery-1/2 cup
  • red chillies- 10
  • asafoetida- pinch
  • salt to taste
  • oil- 4 spoons

For tempering:

  • mustard seeds- 1/2 spoon
  • cumin seeds- 1/4 spoon
  • urad dhal- 1/4 spoon


Step 1: Wash ginger in fresh water and wipe with dry cloth.

Step 2: Cut ginger into small pieces.

Step 3: Peel the skin of onions and cut into small pieces.

Step 4: Heat pan add 1 spoon of oil and fry the onion pieces at low flame.

Step 5: Later off the flame and keep aside till the temperature reduces.

For tempering:

Step 6: Heat remaining oil in a pan, add fenugreek seeds, black gram.

Step 7: Saute it for 2min and add mustard seeds saute them till they split.

Step 8: Off the flame, add asfoetida and red chillies and mix it well.

Chutney preparation:

Step 9: Take a mixy jar, add ginger, tamarind sauce, fried onions, jaggery, salt.

Step 10: Mix them well into fine paste by adding some water if required.

Step 11: Serve in a bowl and add tempering to chutney.
